Life lessons from a dying 24 year old

I saw this Reddit post this morning by a young man with a terminal illness and only a few months to live.

I am often fascinated by the stories of the dying, they seem to have absolute clarity of what’s important and what’s not and time after time they consistently say the same things:

  • You will regret the things you didn’t do rather than what you did do
  • Don’t waste your time doing work you don’t enjoy
  • Be your own crazy self and don’t worry about what people think
  • Spend more time with the people you love

In fact, the Reddit post is 2 years old and with only a few months to live one can only assume the poster has now returned to the infinite ether. But he has left his mark, he has profoundly influenced me 2 years later all because he put his thoughts out there.

I am going to leave you with his final paragraph which is poignant and timely for us all. Live your life.

Leave a mark in this world. Have a meaningful life, whatever definition it has for you. Go towards it. The place we are leaving is a beautiful playground, where everything is possible. Yet, we are not here forever. Our life is a short spark in this beautiful little planet that flies with incredible speed to the endless darkness of the unknown universe. So, enjoy your time here with passion. Make it interesting. Make it count!
